Books & Bits Education and Universidad Mayor are pleased to offer the following two practical continuing professional development training sessions for English teachers and EFL teacher educators in Santiago with leading CEFR and Language Assessment UK expert Thom Kiddle (Director – NILE UK).
A. CEFR & English Profile – Friday 1 June (Full Day)
This workshop will cover an introduction to and hands-on practice with the role of the CEFR in relation to curriculum and assessment in English language programmes. The fundamental principles of the CEFR will be presented and analysed, including a look at the revised and new descriptors from the 2017 revisions. We will explore how the CEFR can be adopted and adapted to meet teachers’ and coordinators’ needs in planning learning outcomes, and measuring them, and tools for supporting this process. A major focus will be the Cambridge English Profile project, with an exploration of the English Vocabulary Profile and its Text Inspector, and the English Grammar Profile.
Participants will gain:
- A detailed understanding of what the CEFR is, and how to use it in curriculum and assessment
- An overview of recent additions to the CEFR
- A working knowledge of the English Vocabulary Profile and Text Inspector
- A working knowledge of the English Grammar Profile
B. Language Testing in the 21st Century – Saturday 2 June (Full Day)
This workshop will present a brief historical overview of the last 100 years of language testing, and consider developments in the last 15 years which have contributed to the current opportunities and challenges for testing in the 21st century. We will consider the role of digital technology in both testing and assessment, the importance of the CEFR in defining action-oriented assessment approaches, and the rise of learning-oriented assessment to bridge the gap between formative and summative assessment.
Participants will gain:
- An understanding of historical developments in language testing
- A practical awareness of the current state-of-the-art
- A range of digital tools to consider in their own assessment practices
- An understanding of the CEFR and Learning-Oriented Assessment and their use in classroom-based assessment
“Thom Kiddle has worked at NILE since 2011, after moving back to the UK from Chile where he was head of academic research and educational technology at the Chilean-British University. He has previously worked in Portugal, the UK, Australia and Thailand in language teaching, teacher training and language assessment. He has a Master’s degree in Language Testing from Lancaster University and the Cambridge Delta, and his role at NILE involves strategic and organizational management, and training and consultancy in a range of areas including testing and assessment, learning technologies, materials development and language teaching methodology. Thom is also treasurer and founding director of AQUEDUTO – the Association for Quality Education and Training Online; webmaster for the Testing, Evaluation and Assessment Special Interest Group of IATEFL; and a member of the Eaquals Board of Trustees.”
